The fastest way to buy the right part for your car is to start from your number plate, not from a parts diagram. Here is how registration lookups work, what they can and cannot tell you, and how to use one to avoid the wrong-part lottery.

Why part fitment goes wrong

Most wrong-part purchases happen for the same reason: two cars that look identical from the outside can be completely different underneath. A single generation of a popular hatchback can span multiple engines, gearboxes, brake sizes and facelift changes. A part described as fitting your model and year may still be wrong for your exact build.

Buying from a photo and a title alone means you are trusting the seller to have described fitment perfectly, and trusting yourself to know every detail of your own spec. Returns, refunds and wasted postage follow.

What a registration lookup actually tells you

When you enter a UK registration into a vehicle lookup, it is matched against DVLA and industry vehicle data to identify the exact car: make, model, year, engine size and fuel type, and in many cases the specific variant. That removes the biggest source of fitment mistakes, which is misidentifying your own vehicle.

A reg lookup is not magic. It identifies the car as it left the factory. If a previous owner fitted bigger brakes or swapped the engine, you still need to check the modified parts by hand. For everything original, though, it is the most reliable starting point there is.

A quick checklist before you order any used part

1. Start from your reg, not from a model name. Let the lookup identify your exact vehicle.
2. Check the part number where one exists. Original equipment part numbers are the ground truth for fitment. Many listings on Revverse include the OE part number field for exactly this reason.

4. Confirm condition in writing. Use in-app messages so there is a record of what was agreed.

What about modified cars?

If your car is modified, use the reg lookup for everything still standard, and part numbers plus measurements for everything that is not. When in doubt, message the seller with your spec. Sellers who break cars for a living usually know fitment better than any catalogue.
