Buying used car parts online: a UK checklist

Used parts can cost a fraction of new ones, and for older cars they are often the only option. The difference between a bargain and a doorstop is usually a few minutes of checking before you pay. Work through this list before buying any used part online.

1. Confirm it fits your exact car

Model and year are not enough. Engines, facelifts and trim levels change parts mid-generation. Check the part number against your original where you can, and use a registration-based search so compatibility is checked against your actual vehicle rather than a lookalike. 2. Ask the seller these questions

• What vehicle did the part come off (model, year, engine)?
• What is the part number stamped or printed on it?
• What mileage had the donor car covered?
• Why was the car broken or the part removed?
• Are there photos of the part from every side, including damage?

A seller who breaks cars regularly will answer these without blinking. Evasive answers are information too.

3. Know who you are buying from

In the UK your rights differ depending on whether the seller is a trade seller or a private individual. Buying from a trade seller gives you stronger consumer rights, including a 14 day cancellation window for online purchases. Buying privately, the principle is closer to sold as seen, provided the item was described honestly. 4. Pay in a way that protects you

Never move payment off the platform, and be wary of bank transfers to strangers. On Revverse, payment is taken by card through Stripe and held until you receive the part. If something is wrong, you can report a problem in the app and payment to the seller is paused while it is sorted out.

5. Check the part the day it arrives

Open the parcel promptly, compare the part number against what was agreed, and test-fit as soon as you reasonably can. If the part is not as described, raise it straight away in the app messages so there is a record. Waiting weeks weakens every kind of claim, whoever you bought from.
